A few excerpts from the Global Report on Cocaine 2023 by the @UNODC that involve East Africa.
🧵
Map of current cocaine trafficking routes into and out of Africa, and cocaine seizure cases in Africa between 2018–2022.
Brazil continues to be the common country of departure for cocaine trafficked to Africa (a significant transit region) by both ship and air.
Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria Nexus:
Between 2018-2022, the most frequently arrested foreign cocaine mules at Brazilian airports were consistently Nigerian.
Of 150 mules arrested trafficking cocaine in/out of Nigeria (from Brazil), the common transit point was Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Brazil-Kenya-Ethiopia Nexus:
Cocaine is significantly trafficked by air to Eastern Africa.
80% of inbound cocaine reaching Kenya is by air.
In Brazil, of 156 cocaine airport seizures of consignments destined to Africa, 65 were bound for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Brazil-Kenya-Ethiopia:
Brazilian cartel “Primeiro Comando da Capital” has expanded its presence to Africa and Europe, and controls several stages of the cocaine supply chain.
Airports in Kenya and Ethiopia have been targeted as cocaine stopovers enroute from Brazil to Europe.
Kenya, Nigeria and Ethiopia are the leading transit hubs in Africa of cocaine moving by air to Europe.
Multiple EU countries reported cocaine seizures at their airports between 2018–2021 from EA.
Kenya's top cocaine trafficking destinations are Netherlands, Canada and UAE.
A cocaine trafficking channel has been in operation between Port of Durban(SA) and Port of Santos(Brazil) for the last 20yrs.
Now the brazilian cartels are increasingly targeting Portuguese-speaking countries-Mozambique, Angola and Cabo Verde to reach further inland into Africa.
A typical cocaine supply chain and distribution network (kindly note that @Power_STARZ is impractical fiction):
Cocaine mules trafficking patterns when at the transit zones of international airports:
(I have completely avoided the west african aspect as it is too wide and complex, apart from the recent influence from Brazil).
