You fuckers knew exactly what the engine specs needed to be to get what you promised to not just the US government, but dozens of others, but you couldn't deliver. So you reduced the specs to make it all seem like you could.

This is where the under-speccing came in. "Look we can deliver the thrust required" a politician will look at that and think it is fine and sign off on it.

Promised capabilities in future blocks of the aircraft are going to be impossible to deliver because you cannot just magic up additional bleed air and cooling.
So again they knew this under-spec issue existed for years before it started biting them in the ass publicly like this.

Yeah it was a dumbass decision back then because the point was to have the F135 and F136 engine available and have the two companies compete against each other on price and capability, thus offering cost savings to users down the line for initial up front cost.

Yeah you read that right. Barely over half the F-35 fleet can fly out and do its full mission at any time. How much this is related to just the engine we do not know. But considering it is running hot, I would not be surprised at all.

The F-35 was sold to nations that you'd have lower maintenance cost and higher availability than legacy other aircraft. Some airforces in fact reduced their fleet with that in mind (looking at you Netherlands)
