so theres an interesting thing about this video and that specifically is the nature of the violence involved
this video depicts a classic monkey dance
the monkey dance, as described in loving detail and color by rory miller in this classic taxonomy of violence, plays out wherever tensions are high or Order is frayed
it is fundamentally a subclass of status-oriented violence
a.co
a monkey dance commences when one party sees an opportunity for violence that might increase their own social standing, in some sense, or lower another's
at that point, each party takes turns in raising tensions by holding eye contact, trading insults, and increasing proximity
in a classic scenario, two patrons at a dive bar incidentally make eye contact. "what are you looking at, buddy?"
so it begins
sometimes the non-initiator can break it off with careful humor or with an act of submission.
it is difficult not to let the dance play you, however. your performance is practically hardwired
and once one dancer puts a hand on the other's chest, a haymaker inevitably follows
one notable feature of monkey dances in the wild is that they tend to be exclusively matters of homosocial conflict
men do not try to start non-domestic, socially-oriented fights with random women, unless the men are profoundly mentally ill. women occupy a separate status hierarchy.
non-domestic male -> female violence tends instead toward predation, for sex or money
women meanwhile tend not to start physical fights with unknown people of either gender, but most certain not with men and not for social standing
now
ive had detailed discussions with one of my friends, a trans woman, about how quickly and completely the orientation of her homosocial competitiveness switched from male to female when she transitioned
in her case this reorientation was permanent and quite complete
this is evidence of one potential, probably meaningful case of improper lumping in the taxonomy of gender and sexuality
that it can be identified by a fairly discernable feature--the orientation of one's homosocial competitiveness--is a novelty
