MRT Kajang Line Stations power ranking.
Thought it would be fun since the launch of MRT Putrajaya to look back at the previous MRT line. I've visited every single Kajang Line station, so now lets see which are the best and which are the crappiest.
A ranking thread.
Some rules on how i judge this.
1. Accessibility and connectivity to surrounding area for pedestrians
2. Housing availability
3. Major attraction or commercial area
4. Transit connections
5. Station design
I also wont include the Sg Buloh and Kg Selamat since they've been absorbed to the PY line.
And it must be said that some aspects to this ranking would be subjective and biased to my opinions. It's just a fun exercise to me.
So without further ado let's start with number 29
No 29: Kwasa Sentral
The station at the very bottom of the list. This station has literally nothing going for it now. It's basically what big park n ride. No housing, no commercial area, no attractions. The closest thing within 10 minutes walk are factories. Nothingness
No 28: Kwasa Damansara
The other Kwasa. Kwasaland might one day finally be developed in this desolate piece of land. But that day is not today. Just as bad as its sibling Kwasa Sentral. But at least there's EPF's new HQ I guess. Retirement
No 27: Bandar Tun Hussein Onn
Despite being named BTHO, the station's located at the neighbourhood's edge with no direct access via walking or bus. And for some reason the nearby New Village is fenced off. With CKE and a cringely named condo nearby, BTHO deserves its rank. Cringe
No 26: Pusat Bandar Damansara
It wasnt that bad before, but because of Pavilion this station is just horrible. No way to walk to the Bukit Damansara side of the MRT due to construction. Walking to Bangsar is possible but hard because of the hills. Busses infrequent. Horrible
No 25: Bukit Dukung
There’s little reason to come here unless you’re lucky enough to live at Taman Cuepacs. Even then crossing Jalan Cheras isn’t nice. The namesake Kg Bukit Dukung isnt even properly connected. And being next to a highway is always a negative. Uninteresting
No 24: Phileo Damansara
On one side you've got an unaccessible golf course. On the other is the wide sprint highway that's only crossable via a 100 meter bridge to get to Phileo Damansara offices. The only residential use are some poorly connected houses in Sek 16/17 PJ. Isolated
No 23: Taman Connaught
They dropped this station next to a highway interchange. Despite that they really put an effort to connect to the few residential areas and the dying Cheras Mall. Unfortunately not enough to balance the cons. More feeder bus lines would help. Effort
No 22: Batu 11 Cheras
This place felt like it was a more vibrant community back in the day. But it seems the MRT hasnt been able to inject much life to the area. Perhaps the new condo there can someday. Now at least the nearby Taman and New Village can use the MRT. Stagnant
No 21: Taman Pertama
The main attraction would’ve been the velodrome. But that now sits broken and seems abandoned. At least the housing here is abundant and quite near with some connections to the isolated ones. Still unfortunately sat next to a highway interchange. Dilapidated
No 20: Taman Suntex
Taman Suntex is a nice mature neighbourhood. I’m no fan of the car-centric design of the YouCity dev. But at least it’s kinda linked. Cant say the same for the residential area opposite of Suntex. Completely cutoff from the MRT by the highway. Disconnected
Taking a break because it was late last night. Stay tuned for the rest of the top 20 later this afternoon 😬.
No 19: Bandar Utama
This station has one purpose, to access OneUtama. Even that it doesnt do a good job being located in a far corner outside the mall separated by bridges. It’s far from BU’s houses. Disconnected from TTDI. without OU this station would rank lower. Inconvenient
No 18: Sri Raya
There’s a surprisingly wide variety of housing here. Not a lot of commercial spaces to make the area more interesting but there are a few schools nearby. Shame that like many other stations, it’s located on top of a highway. Never fun to cross. Ok
No 17: Taman Midah
On one side you have a dense residential area, the other a massive graveyard. Not much else here. The hospital is near but isnt very accessible. The ParknRide feels like a waste because the MRTis already close to the city, people can just drive straight. Meh
No 16: Mutiara Damansara
On paper looks like a great station surrounded by Ikea, Malls, offices and homes. But once there, you'll notice that all the malls are far because there's only one direct connection. While the homes are isolated from the station by walls. Disappointment
No 15: Kajang
Main purpose is to connect to KTM Kajang. Despite that, it has a decent amount of housing surrounding it on top of public amenities, schools and religious spaces. The area has a nice small town vibe to it. Would've been nicer if Jalan Reko is a bit narrower. KTM
No 14: Sungai Jernih
Right next to Kg Sungai Jernih. If you want to visit a charming Malay Kampung via MRT then this station is your best bet. The upcoming condo will more homes accessible to the station while the nearby KPJ is an added bonus. Kampung
No 13: Tun Razak Exchange
Once TRX is fully completed then this area might be nicer. Today the station feels isolated with confusing navigation to the nearby towers. And depends on how you feel about public spending, the station is by far the biggest and grandest. Extravagant
No 12: Stadium Kajang
Has a lot going for it but hampered by poor walking infra. Too many barriers that limits free movement of people to the station. But aside that you’ve got Satay Kajang, the Stadium and a charming though maybe neglected colonial vibes of pekan Kajang. Old
No 11: Surian
Located next to the dense commercial area of Sunway Nexis and Tropicana Gardens Mall on the other side where both are relatively well connected. So you’re bound to find something interesting to you here. Though there is a lack of convenient residential areas. Shops
We're entering the top 10s now and I'm taking a break again. gotta work lol.
Catch the rest of the list later today.
Aite. Just buka puasa. Time to continue with the rest of the top 10
No 10: Muzium Negara
This station really should be higher. Literally at Muzium Negara. The best MRT for you to get to a park, Perdana Lake Gardens. It's just a shame that connectivity to KL Sentral and everything there is so poor and confusing. Mazy.
No 9: Semantan
Many feeder buses that used to go to PBD have been moved here. That made this station a lot more useful than before. Lots of commercial spaces, offices and Help uni to the north with some expensive residences south. Also the closest station to the Palace. Change
No 8: TTDI
I didn't want to rate it this high because it's actually quite isolated from the rest of TTDI. But consequently that actually makes it quite close to Damansara Kim and Utama. So once you're there it's relatively walkable in very pleasant neighbourhoods. Adjacent
No 7: Kota Damansara
From outside this is a boring station. But look deeper you see a variety of uses. Healthcare, education and housing. It's also the only MRT with walk-up apartments nearby. This kind of environment around MRTs is rare, pushing it to be ranked this high. Rare
No 6: Taman Mutiara
No MRT Station has malls surrounded by as many dense landed houses as this station. It's a decent balance between residential and commercial spaces. Too bad Jalan Cheras adds a major challenge for connectivity. Balanced
No 5: Maluri
Maluri station has 4 different gates, more than the typical 2 gates per MRT. This gives it better access to the relatively dense residential spaces, Aeon and LRT station around it despite Jalan Cheras being a wide and difficult road to cross. Connected
No 4: Merdeka
I'm usually tough on stations waiting for surroundings development to complete, but this MRT is almost as close to Petaling Street as Pasar Seni MRT. It's also connected to the LRT, has my favourite station art and being near many public institutions. Merdeka
No 3: Cochrane
Formerly government housing, Jalan Cochrane now consist of malls, highrises, or brownfield. But since the MRT isnt placed on top of uncrossable trunk roads, the area remains walkable with PPRs, schools, old shophouses, and the ever-popular Ikea in the area. Robust
No 2: Pasar Seni
The cultural heart and soul of Kuala Lumpur. I believe the MRT has played a real role in rejuvenating this area. It made Petaling Street a lot more accessible and less intimidating to visitors. If you want a taste of old KL, this place is a good start. Culture
No 1: Bukit Bintang
BBGS's demolition left a cultural void but Bukit Bintang remains KL's bustling commercial hub, with a high pedestrian volume and plenty to discover beyond glitzy malls. MRT access from multiple entrances and proximity to the monorail add to its allure. Glamour
Anddd that’s a wrap 🌯. This took me way longer than I thought. Properly visiting every station and walking around in my free time took almost two years. But it was fun. Do share your thoughts. Agree disagree? How would you rank your train stations.
I’ll debrief my thoughts below
