What’s important to consider after Barca’s 4-0 loss vs Real Madrid 🤝
Humiliated by our eternal rivals in Camp Nou. It hurts for fans and players. However, it’s essential treating it for what it is. What is that?
A bump in the road/not a big deal. We simply have to move on and see the bigger picture. No reason to get stuck.
In 2023, we have played four El Clasico’s. Eight halves of football. Given the circumstances, we have performed exceptionally well in 7/8 halves. The only time we have been able to field our strongest team is in the 3-1 win vs Real Madrid in the Supercopa final.
In the other games against Real Madrid we have had key players missing. Yesterday, we were without four guaranteed starters:
• Frenkie
• Dembele
• Christensen
• Pedri
Even then, we played an astonishing first half. Real Madrid fans were unhappy at halftime.
There are factors which can’t be controlled by players and coaches.
Sometimes we are very efficient in front of goal, other times we will be wasteful. Last night we could not get the final pass right. It happens.
4-0 might look bad on paper, but the score is not important. We could have lost 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0, and the consequence would be the same: Exit.
When we conceded our second goal, we had to take risks and look for a goals. We had to sacrifice stability defensively.
We have competed well against Real Madrid in 3.5/4 games. That second half was the exception.
Real Madrid can eat any team alive with enough momentum. Don’t forget the quality of the team we are up against. They are incredible.
What cost us in the second half was individual mistakes, poor squad depth and lack of quality players in certain positions. It became clear when we had to look for a comeback. Kessie fouling Vinicius on his way out of the box killed the game.
If this second half was the continuation of a series of bad performances against Real Madrid, I would be worried. It’s not. As I said, it’s an exception, and the loss can be explained and understood. We have competed better than Real Madrid in recent clashes.
There are other games under Xavi that has made me more upset. Times where we have not been able to compete vs teams of less quality.
Believe it or not, we have experienced worse defeats under Xavi.
