Remember GeoCities?
It was the OG website builder that made your MySpace page look like it was designed by a professional.
It was acquired by Yahoo for $3.6 billion.
Then they shut it down of course.
Here's the story. ๐Ÿงต
Back in 1999, GeoCities was THE place to be for anyone who wanted to create their own website.
Yahoo saw the potential and acquired the company for a whopping $3.6 billion. That's like a gazillion dollars today.
Some people were scratching their heads and wondering what Yahoo was thinking but others saw the genius move behind it.
GeoCities was the ultimate destination for self-expression and creativity on the web. Yahoo saw that and jumped on the opportunity.
Now you may be thinking "But Andrew, why did Yahoo shut down GeoCities in 2009?"
Well my friend sometimes the things we love don't last forever. Just like your favorite pair of jeans, they eventually wear out and become too embarrassing to wear in public.
But let's not dwell on the past. GeoCities may be gone but its legacy lives on. It paved the way for the rise of blogging and social media.
It taught us that anyone can have a voice on the internet and that's a beautiful thing.
So next time you're reminiscing about the good old days of the internet raise a glass to GeoCities.
The site that made graphic design everyone's passion with websites making people's eyes burn.
It may have been a little cheesy and outdated but damn it was fun while it lasted.
