@dikko_radda
I am writing this open letter to you to highlight some key reforms & policies in agriculture that could help improve the development of our state over the next 4 years.
However, despite the significant potential of agriculture in Katsina State, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed to ensure sustainable development.
To this end, I would like to suggest the following reforms and policies that could help improve the agricultural sector in Katsina State:
and enhance food security.
The government could develop new irrigation schemes, rehabilitate existing ones, and promote private sector participation in irrigation development.

Pivot irrigation system has since proven to be a successful alternative in the Gurara Irrigation project in Kaduna state.
The cost of implementing pivot irrigation technology can be high due to the need for a reliable source of water, the cost of installing the pivot system, and the cost of maintaining the system. Hence more suitable for commercial farmers.
This is creates an avenue for the state to attract FDIโs and DDIโs to boost IGR and promote commercial agriculture.
The government could create an enabling environment for private sector investment in agriculture by providing tax incentives, facilitating access to finance, and promoting public-private partnerships in agriculture.
Additionally, the state ministry of agriculture could take it upon themselves to open katsina for investment in Agriculture through an annual Agro investment summit, where key players in the sector will be provided with scalable opportunities along the multiple value chains.
PROMOTING MECHANIZED FARMING: Mechanized farming is a vital component of modern agriculture, and it could help increase productivity, reduce labor costs, and improve crop quality.
The tractor population in Katsina state is estimated to be less than 500, and Hp/Ha of less than 0.1Hp/Ha which falls far off the 1.5Hp per Hectare recommendation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
Therefore, the government could promote mechanized farming by providing access to affordable farm machinery and equipment, facilitating training for farmers on the use of modern farming technologies, and creating incentives for farmers to adopt mechanized farming practices.
..to build on the progress made with Mahindra on the farm-to-folk initiative.
The government could enhance extension services by recruiting and training more extension workers, equipping them with the necessary tools and resources, and ensuring that they are adequately remunerated to motivate them to provide quality services.
Several researchers have found out that proper extension services have the potential to increase productivity by 30%.
Furthermore, thereโs an opportunity for youth to develop disruptive extension technologies for small holder farmers to achieve sustainability.

The government could improve access to markets by developing market infrastructure, facilitating the establishment of commodity exchange markets (like Dawanau commodity market in Kano), and promoting value addition to agricultural products.
It is imperative to also focus on rehabilitating and investing in the processing facilities that once existed in the state, such as the ginneries, textile factories, tanneries and milling factories across the state.
In conclusion, as we wrap up this open letter, it is important to reiterate the significance of the human development index in any society.
A state's progress and prosperity is not only measured by economic growth and infrastructural development, but also by the quality of life of its citizens.
As such, i urge the Governor elect and his administration to prioritize the improvement of the human development index of Katsina State, by investing in agriculture, education, healthcare, and other social services.
