10 mango varieties worth trying this summer – an etymology thread:
1. Banganapalli: From Banaganapalli in Nandyal district, Andhra Pradesh. This variety in very popular in Telangana as well. It's also known as Banginapalli, Banaganapalle, Beneshan, Safeda.
2. Alphonso: Named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a 15th century Portuguese general and viceroy. While establishing Portuguese colonies in India, he introduced new varieties of fruits and vegetables. This variety is also known as Hapus.
3. Totapuri: From Hindi “tota” meaning “parrot” because it has the colors of a parrot: red, green, yellow. It’s also known as Ginimoothi, literally “parrot face” since it is shaped like a parrot’s beak. This variety is also known as Collector mango.
4. Sindhoori: Inspired by the vermilion color of the mango, which resembles the “sindhoor” worn by women.
5. Malgova: So named because it tastes like “milk khova”
6. Dasheri: Takes its name from the village Dasheri (in the Lucknow district of Uttar Pradesh) where it was first grown.
7. Langra: Originally from the Varanasi region in UP, Langra is named after a saint who was lame. He was the first to develop this variety in his home ground.
8. Chausna/Chausa: Named after Chausa, a place in the Bihar, to commemorate the victory of Sher Shah Suri over Humayun in the Battle of Chausa.
9. Amrapali: Named after the famous court dancer Amrapali. It’s said she was born at the foot of a mango tree in the royal gardens of Vaishali. Hence the name Amrapali (from Amra “mango” and Paliawa “young sprouts or leaves”).
10. Himayat: Also known as Imam Pasand or Humayun Pasand, this variety is named after the Mughal emperor Humayun because it used to be the favorite of the ruling class. Despite its whitish flesh, Himayat mangoes are extremely sweet.
