Family: Blood or …?
THREAD
In an ideal world, "family first" is a term that represents the responsibility of people of the same origin and related by blood to be there for each other. This responsibility is inspired by love and upheld by a sense of duty.
However, this hasn't often applied in the real world as we've seen relatives exist in a hostile, abusive or neglectful manner; such that they've become more problematic than beneficial to each other.
It's these things that leave us asking who family really is and why.
Some of us have been lucky to have come in contact with people who over a period of time impacted our lives so positively; some even through many years. These people are our family.
Our family should be:
▪︎A Safe space:
There are people that make us feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable with them cos we know they wouldn't shame, abuse or judge us with our weaknesses but would rather support us as we work on them.
▪︎Reliable:
True family is reliable and consistent. We can count on them to avail time to respond to and be there for us whenever needed.
They're not the ones to be nonchalant towards things that concern our well being.
▪︎Supportive:
Those who see our vision and value enough to support us through our goals and towards becoming the best version of ourselves are family.
These people respect and appreciate our judgement enough to support our decisions and actions.
▪︎Loyalty:
People that stay true to us even when there's an incentive to betray us are family. These are folks that value what we share above money or other benefits.
■ What family Isn't:
While being family comes with it's responsibilities, and there shouldn't be so much entitlement as this makes the relationship overwhelming.
Family isn't overburdening.
Also, family isn't controlling.  "You have to be a pilot"
No!
You have to be who aligns with your purpose. Heed advice but listen to your inner voice.
In rounding up, family doesn't keep scores. We don't keep record of things we've done for our family as proof of indebtedness.
Here, all acts of kindness are out of goodwill rather than transactional.
■ Summary:
When people genuinely show us love, care, support and loyalty, we shouldn't betray or take them for granted.
True family is had to find and if you have it, please keep it.
