How to become addicted to doing hard things.
Use "Temptation Bundling"
I grew up in Canada.
Where the maple syrup is plentiful.
And the winters are cold as balls.
Exercising in the summer was easy.
I'd be out all day with my friends playing basketball, kick the can, and capture the flag.
But the winter?
Not so much.
Sure, we had sports at school.
But during weekends and holidays, I needed to exercise.
I found my solution in the last place I would have thought to look.
My Nintendo 64.
I made a deal with myself.
I could only play N64β€”if I rode the stationary bike in our house.
I didn't know it at the time.
But I was using "Temptation Bundling".
I was taking something I NEEDED to doβ€”and pairing it with something I WANTED to do.
I didn't WANT to exercise in my house.
But the prospect of getting to play a few rounds of Mario Tennis made it much more attractive to me.
Let's look at a few more examples:
NEED: Fold your clothes
WANT: Watch your favorite Netflix show
🎁 Temptation Bundling:
You can only watch your favorite show while you're folding clothes
NEED: Spend time with a difficult client/relative
WANT: Eat at your favorite restaurant
🎁 Temptation Bundling:
Only go to your favorite restaurant when you're conducting a meeting
NEED: Do cardio
WANT: Listen to true-crime podcasts
🎁 Temptation Bundling:
Only listen to true-crime podcasts while you're doing cardio
It's remarkable.
After some time, you will actually train your brain to crave the "NEED" activity.
Because you've linked it to the "WANT".
This simple technique can be a great way to overcome the procrastination monster.
And learn to love doing hard things in the process.
Have you tried temptation bundling?
That's a wrap!
