I've interviewed many people over my 19+ years in corporate finance and given countless mock interviews to mentees.
Ace your next interview with these answers:
1. Tell me about yourself
Don't:
- repeat your resume
- emphasize the personal
Do:
- prepare a two minute blurb that highlights how your skills align to the position
2. How do you deal with difficult people
Don't:
- express negative feelings
- complain
Do:
- describe an example where you dealt creatively with a difficult person and emphasis the good that came from that experience
3. What's your biggest accomplishment
Don't:
- give a personal example, unless there is job relevance or it shows how hard you pushed through a challenge
Do:
- give an example of a project you led, describe the challenges and how that perseverance applies to this new role
4. Where do you want to be in 5 years
Don't:
- get too specific, especially if it has nothing to do with this role
Do:
- emphasize growth and continued desire to be challenged
5. Why do you want this role
Don't:
- be wishy-washy
Do:
- prepare a clear reason why you're interested in this role, what you believe you can contribute to this new role, and what skills you want to develop
