We've had a recurring issue with our kitchen plumbing for a couple of years. Mgmt has sent many staff plumbers. Dudes who seemed in a hurry and weren't really listening to the details of the problem & our theories about what is wrong. They would do quick fixes and leave...
But a few months later, the problem would resurface.
Last time, they sent a black lady plumber!
You know what she did?
She listened!
When she came and we started explaining the problem, she looked straight at us, stood still and took in all the info we gave her, nodding.
And then she fixed the problem in a way that took longer than the dude plumber's, but the problem stayed fixed!
That one woman fixed a tap that 5 dudes before her had just patched up and postponed.
This is just one anecdote, but I'm sure women can match and exceed men in a lot of traditionally male blue collar professions that require careful listening, thinking, diagnosing.
You know what though? I'm sure that in the system records, the dude plumbers are shown as more "efficient" cos they probably do more calls per hour. She spent almost 3x the time they did in our home, not cos she was inefficient but cos she was doing the job thoroughly.
Oh yes, this. My dad was very handy and taught me and my sister handy stuff and tools and such. But most of the friends I grew up with didn't hold a tool in their hand until engineering workshop, if ever.
Many did learn in the US DIY women.
My dad is such a civil engineer through and through! On US visits, he's most enamored by the bridges and Loews type massive hardware stores. One of my earliest memories as a kid is going to hardware stores in India with him, and him teaching me about nuts, bolts, washers etc.
The reason I'm unimpressed by most chest thumping engineers is my dad had THE most engineering job possible. Literally building bridges! Dude was out on construction sites everyday, dealing with actual raw material and workers and govt and cops and dacoits and Naxals.
And he never does any strutting or "we engineers are such awesome" thing I see on linked from people who are often not even in engineering roles randomly going 'Engineers 💪' and jhadofying random gyan. Go back to your Tableau.
