There are major (most popular) versions of books posted on Amazon, through kdp.
✅ Kindle (ebook)
✅ Paperback (print)
✅ Hardcover (print)
✅ Audible (audio)
These are the 4 most popular formats publishers upload on Amazon, in relation to books.

Each of these formats have their features and way of uploading them.
But for the purpose of this tutorial, I want to explain only Kindle and Paperback features in relation to kdp select and expanded distribution because those are the only 2 formats affected.

1. KDP SELECT
This is a feature that is present in only kindle (formats).
Kindle on Amazon means ebook, a format that can only be read on a device called the kindle device. This device is like a tab or iPad, and it’s function is majorly for reading ebooks.

While uploading your ebook on kdp, there’s an option of adding your book to kdp select or ignoring it.
What then is kdp select?
This is a feature that allows buyers to read the pages of your ebook, rather than buy them.
Buyers usually subscribe to Amazon packages before hand..

Buyers usually subscribe to Amazon packages before hand..
and this gives them the opportunity to read different books that is available to be read.
So with that subscription, instead of a buyer to outrightly buy a kindle ebook for say $4.99, they can read through its pages and spend $2.70.
So with that subscription, instead of a buyer to outrightly buy a kindle ebook for say $4.99, they can read through its pages and spend $2.70.
This way, the buyer can read more pages from different books, jot the important points, and move to other books.
So the money used to buy off a book, can be used to read 3 books.
This process is called KENP (Kindle Edition Normalized Pages), so every page read is kenp read.

How does this affect you as the publisher?
Amazon pays the author between $0.004 - 0.005 per page read.
So if you have a 100 page ebook for $3.99 & an interested reader reads the entire 100 pages, Amazon will pay you 0.004 x 100 = $0.40, instead of the $2+ royalty per book sale

Now, will you prefer reads to outright sale? Let’s decide 🤗
1. If you add your book to kdp select while uploading, it means you want your book to have the reads feature as explained above.
2. Your books on kdp select will be available for a 90 days period which you can’t edit.

This means that by adding your book to kdp select, you can’t remove it until after 90 days.
3. If your book is on kdp select, you CANNOT publish that book on another publishing platform until the 90 days period (after the date of publication) is over.

4. If your book is not on kdp select, it CANNOT be available for free promotion because this promotion is enjoyed by buyers who have active “reads” subscription on Amazon and since they aren’t buying but just reading. This time, for free 🤗.
My Observed Disadvantage of KDP SELECT
1. Recently, there’s something called abnormal reading activity where Amazon sends a mail saying someone tried manipulating your reads and they’ve blocked it but you don’t have to do anything about it.
I find this glitchy because…
1. Recently, there’s something called abnormal reading activity where Amazon sends a mail saying someone tried manipulating your reads and they’ve blocked it but you don’t have to do anything about it.
I find this glitchy because…
Almost everyone I know that got this message usually get their account terminated sooner or later, and Amazon won’t ever take the blame.
This only happens to books that have been added to kdp select.
So to avoid that, I just pass and not use the feature.

2. I noticed another glitch sometime ago where all your reads comes in multiples of 500 like you can refresh your report this morning and see 500 reads, and in the afternoon, 1,000 or 1,500 reads, then at night 2,000 or 2,500 reads.
This seem really glitchy & suspicious to me.

3. While some people read a few pages of the book & decide to buy & own the book, a lot of people just read, take notes and don’t buy.
It makes me feel like I’m losing sales 😩. I might be wrong with this but this is my own POV.
So for short books, I don’t use kdp select 👎

So, in conclusion, reads or kdp select or kenp is doing more hard than good for me and that’s why I’ve ignored it for sometime.
I’ll still use the feature when I observe that everything is stable.
Yes you can upload today and get reads after 6 hours 🤗. Sweet feeling 🤸🏾♂️

EXPANDED DISTRIBUTION
Just as kdp select affects only kindle ebooks, expanded distribution only affects paperback formats.
When uploading your paperback version, there’s an option to choose or ignore expanded distribution on your book on the pricing page.

What then is expanded distribution?
This is a feature that allows third party book sellers to have physical copies of your books in their book stores.
It gives your book exposure and allows for distribution across Amazon borders or channels.
This is a feature that allows third party book sellers to have physical copies of your books in their book stores.
It gives your book exposure and allows for distribution across Amazon borders or channels.
Simply put, this feature is like a partnership with another distribution company to distribute paperback versions of our books to academic institutions, libraries or other bookstores.
This means that a third party can come on Amazon to have your books displayed in their bookstore or library to meet offline buyers or walking customers.
This is another added source of income for the publisher as Amazon pays 40% of books sold via this channel.

Advantages of Expanded Distribution
1. More royalties
2. More exposure
3. Research from your book can be cited in other academic materials
Disadvantages
1. You get 40% of your royalty after print instead of the usually 60%
2. Only available for paperback (no hardcover)

3. A lot of low content books are not eligible for the expanded distribution feature because they don’t have ISBN.
Only books with ISBN are eligible for this feature.

How do you get paid?
Royalties for sales made via this channel are paid every 90 days. So all payment is accumulated after 90 days and paid with that month royalty.
You can just wake up to check your report and see an additional $300 that you weren’t expecting.
How sweet 🤗

And the report is displayed immediately the payment is made so you can track the sales locations and books sold via this third party distribution channel.
So, I have no reason not to add my eligible books to Expanded Distribution because it brings in more income and increases my book expose at thesame time 🤗
