In the US, if your affordable rental apartment is shabby with age, it just sucks for you. You don't own it, can't change anything, and your best bet is to get a mortgage company as your landlord elsewhere.

In Singapore, the owned houses become homes.
I don't think it's appropriate for the US to start cramming *everyone* like sardines into small apartments (that would really kill the fertility of our best and brightest, as clearly happens in Singapore).
But it's truly amazing how badly US cities are governed in comparison.
