How to reverse-engineer your ideal life:
Yesterday, I shared this quote from Warren Buffett on how to live a good life:
“You should write your obituary and reverse-engineer it.”
I haven't been able to get this out of my head.
Coincidentally, I was listening to a podcast today and they mentioned a 2008 blog post from Cal Newport:
"The most important piece of career advice you probably never heard"
The advice goes like this:
"Fix the lifestyle you want. Then work backwards from there."
Sounds familiar.
Newport suggests defining your ideal future lifestyle:
• How much control do you have over your schedule?
• What’s the intensity level of your job?
• What’s your social life like?
• What’s your family like?
• What type of work?
• Where do you live?
Using questions like this, you can form an image in your mind of the ideal 'future you'.
Example 1: The Solopreneur
You live in a nice house in a cozy community-oriented city. You set your own hours, and can accomplish your most meaningful tasks in less than 4 hours per day. Leaving more time to spend enjoying nature with your family.
Example 2: The High-Performer
You live in a nice apartment in a bustling city center. You work in a fast-paced environment which is always pushing you to learn new things. On weekends, you let loose with a group of close friends.
Use this image to guide your career and lifestyle decisions.
Let it act as your North Star.
Revisit and revise it often.
It will be your consultant whenever you are choosing new goals or habits.
Please make sure you check out the original blog post by Cal Newport.
That's a wrap!
