In an era where shot value is determined by probability (xG), last night showed long shots can still be decisive.
A thread to look at the change in De Bruyne's goalscoring habits & 2 young successors in the art of long range shooting.
Kevin de Bruyne has adjusted his game since Haaland's arrival. To put it short, from primarily a goalscorer to creator.
How it plays out on the pitch:
β€’ Deeper role / fewer runs into the box
β€’ Stronger box presence in Haaland
β€’ Subsequently more space outside the box
This change has also impacted the type of goals he scores.
Whereas last season just 5 out of 19 goals came from outside the box, this season it's been 7 out of 10 so far.
Only the last 2 I'd describe as situational.
Technique-wise, there's virtually nothing De Bruyne can't do.
He can place his shots, hit them first-time or while in stride. He can score with either foot.
But if there's one particular shot that could be considered his speciality, it would be the driven variant.
Onto the first of his successors, πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡· Orkun KΓΆkçü (22, 8/6)
The graph below is from November, but shows A) just how lethal Kâkçü is from outside the box & B) how much his non-penalty goalscoring relies on long range shooting.

This season 6 out of Kâkçü's 7 non-penalty goals have come from outside the penalty area. The 7th was a volley just inside the box.
He can score with both feet. Is a bit of a volume-shooter, but a master in shot placement, proving power is overrated.
Next in line is πŸ‡·πŸ‡Έ Lazar SamardΕΎiΔ‡ (21, 8/10).
Played by far the least minutes, but there's an obvious trend to his goalscoring.
5 out of 7 so far have been from outside the box. One just inside the box.
Out of the 3 players, he's best at creating his own shooting angles.
Samardžić's shots have a lot of curve, in combination with a solid amount of power & usually come at a difficult height for goalkeepers.
Can also hit'm with both feet & while all 3 have tremendous shooting technique, his ceiling could be the highest.
With the rise of analytics, long shots have somewhat fallen out of favour for more advantageous shooting positions.
But there will always be a place for them in football, particularly with young maestros like πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡· Orkun KΓΆkçü & πŸ‡·πŸ‡Έ Lazar SamardΕΎiΔ‡ around to defy the xG Gods.
