My rough impression is: Down Under is a bizarro world where right and left are actually effective.

The mere fact that Australia apparently managed to pay down its national debt while remaining a technologically modern Western country and without descending into autocracy or Mad Max...seems like a pretty important fact.

TLDR: Australia and New Zealand are worth studying. I haven't touched on the (IMO balancing) influence of being near Asia, and having to be pragmatic as a consequence, but that's a huge factor as well.
