Forest And Climate Leaders Partnership (FCLP) initiative:
1. It is a new international VOLUNTARY group to accelerate the contribution of forests to global climate action.
a. It was initially announced at New York Climate Week in September 2022.
2. It is the United Kingdom-led voluntary partnership that was formally launched at UNFCCC COP27 in Egypt to maintain the momentum of global action on climate change through forest-based initiatives.
a. FCLP will operate with rotating co-chairs and regular consultations and avenues for non-state actors like the private sector and Indigenous peoples to engage.
b. USA and Ghana are the first co-chairs.
c. It comprises 28 members including the USA, Singapore, and France.
3. It is dedicated to advancing ambition from the Glasgow Leaders Declaration on Forests and Land Use.
a. It will support the goals of the declaration, focusing on stepping up global efforts to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030,
and promoting sustainable production and trade.
4. 28 countries, representing over 60% of global GDP and 33% of the worldโ€™s forests, have already joined the new partnership and are committed to leading by example on one or more of the FCLPโ€™s action areas.
5. Six FCLPโ€™s action areas include:
a. sustainable land use economy and supply chains;
b. mobilising public and donor finance to support implementation;
c. shifting the private finance system;
d. supporting initiatives led by Indigenous Peoples and local communities;
e. strengthening and scaling carbon markets for forests;
f. building international partnerships and incentives to preserve high-integrity forests.
Note: As of now, India is NOT part of this initiative.
