How to Call a Consult as a Resident π²π€
Tbh, I just got one of the most organized consults Iβve ever received, so I wanted to write a quick thread on how this medicine resident did it π

1) Say these 3 things first:
Iβm calling from ______ team with a consult on:
- Patientβs name
- MRN (medical record number)
- room #
Iβm calling from ______ team with a consult on:

2) 1 sentence stating what the topic of the consult is
3) Past medical/surgical history
4) Data that will be relevant for consultant:
- relevant labs
- recent ECHO results
- imaging findings (CT/US/MRI)
etc.
This shows you put in legitimate effort & are not just trying to dump care onto the other team

5) Give consultant time to ask questions / clarify
This part is really important and where camaraderie is built in the hospital πͺ

6) The part that REALLY impressed me today, was that the medicine resident knew the exact dates we were already planning on operating on this patient (next month), also, she had done some digging to know that the reason we hadnβt already operated on the patient was because we were waiting on cardiac clearance β‘οΈ
She went ahead spoke with cardiology to make sure they were aware of the patient being hospitalized again, and to see what optimizations they would recommend preoperatively. Wow! Talk about going above & beyond.
