Designing realistic training drills, a thread ๐Ÿงต
One of the most difficult parts of session planning is designing your own training drills that are game realistic, so I wanted to share one of my favourite ways to design practices.
Step 1 is to identify common scenarios within games (or the games of opposition teams).
For example, we're going to use this counter attacking scenario. In this image, we can see a 3v2 counter attack with recovery defenders from Notts Forest v Arsenal. But how can we turn this into a practice?
Step 2 is to visualise the scenario you identified within a practice setting. Something I like to do is draw a practice layout over the top of the initial image and it starts bringing the practice design together.
Step 3 is to bring the practice to life by thinking about how the practice will run, how it can progress, what the intended outcomes are & what coaching detail you can provide within the practice.
Step 4 is to create the practice. Here's a practice I have created using the scenario from the Notts Forest v Arsenal game.
Variation 1: Counter attacking team score.
Variation 2: Defending team win possession and begin to build up.
It's important to consider all eventual outcomes when designing the practice. Forest scored in this scenario but I added other elements to the practice for if they hadn't (the mini goals for Arsenal to begin the build up again).
Within each game there's hundreds of scenarios but you often see a repeat of common scenario's which give you some solid foundations for practice design. Once given the foundations, you just need to be creative and tailor them towards your own needs.
End of thread.
