Smoking is A Masculine Indicator
[WARNING: This is not to advocate for smoking]
Growing up, society tells you smoking is bad, and that you shouldn’t do it.
A few tried, some stuck with it, and others just went with what they were told.
This piece will talk about why smoking is a good indicator of masculinity.
First of all, what is masculinity?
Everybody has their own ideas of what masculinity is, but we can all agree on a few characteristics:
- Rule breaking
-Protective Instinct
-High Testosterone levels
-Risk-taking behavior/tendencies
-Competitiveness and territorialism
CAVEAT:
This is not to say that because you break rules you’re masculine, or because you don’t you’re not masculine.
These are simply the traits that most masculine men possess.
Masculinity is not necessarily the opposite of Feminity. The two complement each other.
So, why is smoking an indicator that a man is likely to possess these qualities? Because he ticks off the first and I think, the most important trait: RULE BREAKING.
It is not in the nature of men to be sheep.
Every man, at some point in his life, has thought about what it would be like to be the most powerful person in the world. Not the most loved, but the most powerful.
When a guy picks up smoking, he takes the first step to becoming an independent thinker by breaking the rule. The rule is ‘don’t smoke.’
The majority of society will not encourage you to smoke.
The reason for picking up smoking is inconsequential.
Perhaps you thought it was cool and decided to experiment. Perhaps peer pressure made you start smoking. It doesn’t matter.
In your mind, you know (or at least you think you know) that you’re not supposed to smoke.
The more intense your masculinity, the higher the chances:
- You will either go on to achieve immense success due to your massive risk-taking tendencies and competitiveness
or
- You will completely crash and fade into oblivion.
You will either succeed or end up homeless.
Smoking is perhaps the best determinant of this intensity in men.
The majority of smokers are losers, but many successful men are also smokers.
They possess the same qualities and it is the qualities that put them into these two categories depending on a few other parameters.
If you’re smart and you smoke, and you’re resourceful and ambitious, you will likely succeed if you work hard and do whatever it takes, or you will get wrecked.
If you’re smart and you DON’T smoke + everything else mentioned above you will either succeed or have a mediocre life.
Men who smoke are more likely to gamble and take more risks. The majority of men who are always very cautious and extremely risk-averse usually don’t pick up smoking/drinking. Perhaps for the same reason.
“Smoking will kill you.”
So is going to war, but men still do it.
If a man is willing to go to war, it is an indication that he is masculine.
This is not to say you should be careless with your health.
The point is that masculine men are the ones who have the highest tendency to put themselves in harm’s way, whether for a good reason or for a stupid reason.
Does smoking mean you will succeed?
There is an element of chance in it, and although you are in control of most variables, you’re not in control of every variable.
People who don’t smoke aren’t necessarily any less masculine. This is not a black-and-white situation.
Smokers can be very adamant about changing their habits. It is the rebellious nature of every masculine man to be in control of his own life, even when headed straight for a ditch.
What determines the decisions of men?
-Intelligence level
-Knowledge acquired
Masculinity does not want to be controlled.
This does not mean you won’t follow when necessary. But a man’s nature is to lead, not follow.
The more you enjoy being hand-held, the less masculine you become.
The ideal aspiration of every man is self-reliance and independence.
Men who smoke are likely to possess these traits, either for better or worse.
However, there are a lot of men who smoke who do not possess these qualities.
If you’re worried about what people will say about you because you smoke, you’re not very masculine.
The life of a man is hard, so the more you lean into it, the less you will care about the opinions of others.
When men pick up feminine qualities:
-Dependency
-Being risk averse
-Emotional reactivity
Etc
They instinctively stay away from smoking, and it makes a lot of sense, because:
“Smoking could kill you” – risk averse
“You will be ostracized” – dependency
Men lead hard lives.
Smoking is often a byproduct of a hard life.
Most women who smoke are prostitutes, hustlers, and those actively fighting for their own sustenance in fields that are not very conducive to Feminity.
Women raised in stable homes who end up marrying well and early rarely pick up smoking.
Women who leave home early without their family’s approval to go do their own thing are more likely to pick up smoking.
Entering the arena of money-making, and self-reliance makes life harder, not easier.
Yes, perhaps more rewarding for those who succeed, but your life does not get easier by depending on yourself, it gets more difficult.
This is a masculine path.
If a man is completely dependent on another person, has zero reasons to worry about his future, and happens to be shielded from the consequences of his own actions, the chances are that he will not pick up smoking.
The harder your life gets, the more likely you will smoke.
If he does pick up smoking, it is most likely as a leisurely activity, not that he was pushed by stress and difficulty in search of an outlet.
Most people who never went through struggle try to demonize smokers because they’ve never been pushed that hard.
Again, struggle isn’t an excuse to pick up smoking, but it is the reason why most men do it.
Smoking, at its core, originates from a place of pain, either present pain or from the past. Pain is not a bad thing. It is not negative.
In fact, it is necessary for molding ideal men
It takes incredible discipline to go through the hardest periods of your life without picking up either smoking or drinking.
If you’ve never even considered indulging in any of these, the chances are that your life is not as difficult, NOT extremely difficult.
Masculinity is neutral.
Because a person is extremely masculine, it does not mean they are good.
Criminals are a good example of this. They possess high aggression and end up choosing a detrimental outlet that harms society as a whole.
It is also noticeable that the more intelligent a person is, the less intense the expression of his masculinity tends to be.
These characteristics exist on a spectrum, they can manifest in small or large quantities.
High-IQ men are more able to rein in these qualities.
It is also because they are more able to control these traits that they succeed more.
If you’re extremely risk aggressive & don’t know when to stop, you will crash and fall back to zero.
If you’re extremely competitive never collaborate, you will fall back to zero.
Except a man tells you he wants to quit smoking, don’t waste your time trying to get him to stop.
People have been doing that since the day he started smoking. He still continued anyway.
He’s not going to stop because somebody told him to.
That is all.
