How to turn your smartphone into a magic pocket computer
10 practical examples:
Red Pill:
The smartphone can be a magic pocket computer -- or a brain-killing device.
The most important factor isn't the device -- it's the relationship the person has with it.
The Smartphone Paradox:
Your phone is a gateway to the world's best knowledge -- and the world's best distractions.
It's like having the best teachers, social clubs, and strip clubs in your pocket 24-7.
Society presents 2 solutions to the Smartphone Paradox:
1. Phone Addict - Glued to phone constantly.
2. Phoneless Luddite - No access to the best technology of this century so far.
Burn out or Miss out.
Let's present the 3rd option ignored by society.
Here are 10 ways to do this:
1. Mood Logs
When in a 7/10 or above mood, capture it on your smartphone
When in a 3/10 or below mood, capture it on your smartphone
1. The date
2. How you feel
3. The cause
After weeks of doing this, you have objective data to re-design your life and environment.
2. Get 2 Phones
1. Kale Phone - Full stack serotonin. Only notes, Kindle, Uber, Maps, and emergency number for 2-3 people.
2. Cocaine Phone - Full stack dopamine. Twitter. Instagram. TikTok. WhatsApp. Anyone can contact.
Use Kale Phone 24-7.
Use Cocaine Phone when necessary.
Observations from the Kale-Cocaine Phone Protocol:
1. The Kale Phone resets your baseline.
2. Your Cocaine phone feels too intense after 60 minutes per day. You start to crave the Kale phone.
3. Think outside the box about how the current problem is framed: Phone or No Phone
3. Ruthlessly Train Algorithms
1. Do I want to see this person in the next 6 months?
2. Did this educate me?
3. Did this make me laugh?
If you answer no to all 3 questions, mute the account.
After 1 week of pruning, your feed is incredible.
4. Avoid To Do Lists. Create Video Games.
To-do lists = Anxiety inducing
Video game levels = Excitement inducing
5. Binaural Beats Alarm Clock
iPhone alarms sound like torture devices.
1. Go to the custom tone store
2. Find a relaxing binaural beat
3. Wake up blissfully.
Start your day with serotonin rather than cortisol
6. Stack Values
Step 1 - Pick a value you want
Step 2 - Brainstorm potential actions
Step 3 - Do 1 per week
"You don’t become confident by shouting affirmations in the mirror, but by having a stack of undeniable proof that you are who you say you are. " - @AlexHormozi
7. How To 10x Creativity
1. Collect the best questions you hear
2. Add them to a spinning wheel app
3. Spin the wheel before bed
4. Leave the question with your subconscious overnight
5. Brainstorm on the question first thing in the morning before any inputs
8. Spaced Repetition For Audio
If you find a great clip:
1. Screen record it
2. Add it to a Photo album called "Lindy Library"
3. Once per month, go for a walk and "Slideshow mode" that album.
You'll be flooded by great ideas you forgot.
9. Create Positive Social Media
Pick an area you'd like to improve: Sleep, Fitness, Relaxation etc
Get a device like Apple Watch, Whoop, Strava etc -- and create groups with friends.
You get the addictiveness of social media and video games -- but for positive means.
@ChrisWillx added me to his Whoop community.
Every day, I wake up and see where I am in the leaderboard for sleep, strain, and recovery.
The social embarrassment of being bottom of the leaderboard acts as a huge motivator.
This essay was inspired by this clip from Steve Jobs - Bicycle of the mind.
The smartphone is a bicycle of the mind β€” that sits in your pocket.
