Can you use AI-powered tools in acdemic writing?
According to leading academic publishers,
Yes, you can...
...if you follow these guidelines πŸ‘‡
Elsevier publishes 2,800+ academic journals including "The Lancet," the world's highest-impact journal.
βœ…According to Elsevier, you can use tools like ChatGPT if you provide a "Declaration of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process."
It should read:
"During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE]β€―in order toβ€―[REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed andβ€―edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for theβ€―content of theβ€―publication."
❌You CANNOT make an AI app like ChatGPT your coauthor becasue these apps don't qualify for authorship.
❌ AI apps cannot be considered authors because "authorship implies responsibilities and tasks that can only be attributed to and performed by humans."
βœ… You can use tools like spelling and grammar checkers and reference managers like Zotero without disclosure.
Try Paperpal if you need a spelling/grammar checker for academic writing.
βœ… You can use AI-powered tools for data processing.
"Where AI or AI-assisted tools are used in this context, they should be described as part of the methodology of the work, with details provided in the Methods section."
βœ… You can use AI-powered tools to improve clarity of images.
❌ But you cannot use AI tools "to enhance, obscure, move, remove, or introduce a specific feature within an image."

❌ You cannot make AI tools your coauthors.
