Game of Thrones is simply a black-pilling story with no aspirational or life-affirming message (unlike LOTR). It’s a story of all the worst qualities of humanity with no redemption arc, nobility, or real heroism. Just petty squabbles and selfish agendas. A story of ugliness.
FYI, I’ve read the books multiple times. I watched a few episodes of the first season and then quit because it was too gory and pornographic.
You can enjoy GoT as a story if you want. Martin is a decent writer. But it’s not going to stand the test of time because no one cares about a fictional character’s selfish agendas, no one cares about a story that doesn’t contemplate meaningful questions. Had the story not sought out to degrade every bit of goodness in the characters (often in horrifying ways) and had it resolved with the rightful king taking the throne and healing the land and people, then people might still care about it in 50 years. Instead they’ll move on to whatever new cultural degeneracy tickles the fancy of the masses and GoT will be a forgotten relic.
Just a reminder that the main point of those discussion is about whether or not GoT can stand the test of time and why, not whether or not you should enjoy it for what it is. Your enjoyment of it has no bearing on its cultural value.
