This whole Primos hate campaign has made me realize how much my experience as a child of Mexican immigrants is considered invalid by the wider Latino/Latine whatever community. All my life I got reminded how imperfect my living experience is… 1/9
Like this wasn’t suppose to happen, I was supposed to grow up in Mexico surrounded by Spanish speakers. It was wrong of me to learn English first before Spanish even though I grew up in a majority English speaking country. 2/9
You get reminded of this all the time by older family members and especially other children of immigrants. It was bad enough I couldn’t roll my R’s but damn did my fellow Mexican middle school classmates remind me of it. 3/9
We would argue all the time about who’s the most Mexican, but why? What was the point of proving how Mexican we are when the majority of us spent of our lives outside of Mexico. Maybe because we’re always reminded by everyone else of how much NOT Mexican we are 4/9
And I internalized all that, the biggest sign of that was the fact that I never had an interested in telling stories about Latinos/Latines because who am I to tell these stories. In my head I always got the impression that I was an imperfect Mexican 5/9
It felt like telling my story was wrong because it would never be accurate to a story about a true Mexican MEXICAN. People would get the impression that I was making the wider Latino/Latine community look bad. But now I see that wasn’t the problem to begin with 6/9
My experience isn’t a bastardization of the Mexican experience, it’s just a different experience. My experience doesn’t make Mexicans look bad because I’m not telling the story of the Mexican experience. I’m telling the story of my experience 7/9
I’m hoping the wider Latino/Latine community especially those in Latin American countries realized that shows like Primos aren’t about them, there for you don’t have to pretend you’re offended by it. 8/9
Our community is wide and massive, there’s enough room to share everyone’s experience. We don’t have to attack one of our own. I hope you realized that 9/9
