I think it’s great that India’s PLI incentives have spurred an increase in electronics exports.
What is less clear for me is what happens after the incentives expire.
Are the proper incentives in place to develop truly globally competitive manufacturing (ex-direct subsidies)?
Not clear to me yet.
There are some signs that the incentives and broader regulatory environment is more about protecting domestic incumbents than creating truly competitive exporters - with tax fraud being the key modus operandi.
Will this matter in long run? Not sure.
Other parts of the economy are not doing as well.
Again, remains to be seen, but this could be a sign that PLIs are doing the heavy lifting here.
