A true friend in Islam:
The Prophet (PBUH) gave us a beautiful and profound example of friendship in this hadith:
β€œThe believer is the mirror of his brother. The believer is the brother of another believer. He safeguards his property for him and defends him from behind.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
A good friend reflects your true self back to you.
He shows you your strengths and weaknesses, your virtues and flaws, your beauty and ugliness.
He does not flatter you or deceive you, but he tells you the truth with kindness and compassion.
A good friend also helps you to improve yourself by giving you sincere advice and constructive criticism.
He reminds you of Allah and His commands, and encourages you to do good deeds and avoid sins.
He does not let you fall into error or misguidance, but he guides you to the straight path.
He is not jealous or envious of you, but he rejoices in your success and supports you in your difficulties.
A good friend treats you like his own family. He loves you for the sake of Allah, and he wants the best for you in this world and the Hereafter.
He does not harm you or betray you, but he protects you and trusts you.
He does not compete with you or envy you, but he cooperates with you and shares with you.
A good friend also respects your rights and fulfills your obligations.
He does not cheat you or oppress you, but he deals with you fairly and justly.
He does not backbite you or slander you, but he speaks well of you and defends your honor.
He does not abandon you or neglect you, but he visits you and keeps in touch with you.
The Prophet (PBUH) said that the believer safeguards his property for him and defends him from behind.
This means that a good friend is loyal and reliable. He does not steal from you or waste your wealth, but he guards it and uses it wisely.
He does not covet your possessions or exploit your generosity, but he appreciates it and reciprocates it.
A good friend also stands by your side and supports you. He does not desert you or betray you, but he helps you and aids you.
He does not expose your secrets or spread your faults, but he conceals them and covers them.
He does not mock you or ridicule you, but he respects you and honors you.
These are some of the qualities of a true friend in Islam, as taught by our beloved Prophet (PBUH).
May Allah bless us with such friends who will be our companions in Paradise.
Ameen.
