I saw a review complain about Primal jumping the shark by introducing more people into season 2 and I thought "oh man what if it messed things up like Jack's final season" but nope. it feels totally natural and reflects the theme that was there from episode 1
the room of the "enlightened scholars" reflecting the cave paintings from two episodes earlier rules
a lot of the show is about balancing empathy & bloodlust. on a surface level the escaped mental patient looks like Spear parallel but in reality he's closer to the Viking chief after losing everything - consumed by directionless bloodlust.
there's a lot of parallels between Spear & the Viking but I like how when both are enveloped in flame Spear looks very beastly while the Viking has the devil's very simple, human, "matter of fact" face. there's a reason he turns into a snake too; he represents impure bloodlust
he & Spear are two sides of the same coin, the core difference being the Viking grew up in an environment where social status/domination matter instead of simply ensuring survival for yourself & your loved ones. he embodies the impurity of human civilization, the forbidden fruit
the Devil's expression and the Viking's mirroring of it give me this vibe of supposed impartiality, of "this is how things are, this is what must be done" vs Spear's tortured, wrinkly anger.
Spear doesn't know what "honor" is - his idea of fairness comes naturally, in a simple sensory way. youtube.com
also, I don't think the Primal Theory episode implies the show actually takes place during a future reset. it was more likely thematic than "lore-building"
this is a very Genndy-like drawing btw. I get the feeling this episode follows the storyboard drawings the closest
another great thing about The Primal Theory is that it works twofold. the 19th century scientists act extremely smug & self-assured in a way that feels antiquated & alien to us. as if our truly modern society would never be guilty of that.
lol I win. loreponies btfo
I wonder if Genndy said "it definitely doesn't take place in a postapocalyptic future" while leaving a lot of other stuff vague because it's "lore" autopilot and he didn't want to be associated with that sort of nerdy tvtropes pandering
some people say "I want to know more about the zombie plague, the coven of witches etc" but this is clearly not that kind of show. these things just HAPPEN without being explained as part of some "world-building" logic and that makes them far more impactful
it's also the team thinking "man, what will we draw next?" and just tapping into what their subconscious tells them is right to do vs what would be logical or consistent in a literal way and that's a perfect approach for a show literally called Primal
jack is the same really. it's board driven with the dialogue also from the artists so it's more about thinking of cool evocative new shit to draw. the opposite of having a "series bible"
