If you want to know why G.O does anything to defend the defenceless, this: he knew riches and poverty. At 15, he lost his dad, leaving his mum, a young widow in her mid-30s, to cater for 7 kids.
Life was tough thereon.
Help came from total strangers.
One of such strangers was late Papi Agbahovbe who ensured G O was given admission to do A level at the Federal School of Arts and Science, Ondo, even when he didn't apply. He only saw his O level result. "This fantastic result is too good for a place in my school", he said
Or Mrs Shttima who saw G.O wandering around University of Jos in that cold evening of September 1988. The bureaucratic process of hostel allocation to fresh students kept G.O in the cold. Mrs Shettima was a helper; he took G.O to her home where he stayed for 2 weeks
On his call to bar, G.O worked with Ozekhome SAN defending the poor but that was what he swore to do. He continued on a larger scale as a lawyer with the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO.
He has had brushes with the police defending the poor and the public interest.
In June 2012, he was arrested by the police at the instigation of Tambuwal and Ihedioha who G.O named as the mastermind of the Farouk Lawan bribe scandal.
June 2022, Police harassed the G.O at the instigation of someone the police refused to name. Premiumtimes speculated that someone was a presidential aspirant of the PDP.
He lives among the poor of his country - a conscious decision he made early in life.
He sees how the law works against the poor and the defenceless. His latest experiences sitting at the police station and the court in Nasarawa State merely affirm what he sees everyday
He does the little he can to defend those he can defend; and attends to those who reach out to him - whether online or offline. "Never snub those seeking legal help" is his philosophy. He learned this from Muhammed Ali
It is on account of this he set up a pool fund which he draws on to defend those who can't afford lawyers and pay lawyers (appearance fees) who defend the poor. His wealthy friends know how he tasks them to contribute to the fund. Some of them are on these streets.
He drew on the fund defending victims of police brutality in the entire South East and Rivers State in 2020. This year alone, he has made legal representation or facilitated legal representation for the defenceless in places like Owerri that are far from his base in Abuja.
Sometimes, a mere phone call to people of power often gets things resolved for the poor.
The Nigerian legal and administration of justice system works against the poor. We must do all within our power to defend the defenceless.
If you want to join the pool of G.O's funders, check the pinned tweet on his TL.
May the gods bless you as you do.
Good morning from the sanctum sanctorum of the shrine
