70% of brands struggle with creating effective video ads.
But my clients consistently generate $50k+ from the ads I create.
Here is a step-by-step guide.
Craft a persuasive video ad that will 10x your conversion rates:
🧵
First, let’s address a few things.
You don’t need:
• Flashy transitions
• Original video content
• Dumb-looking You-Tube style thumbnail
You'll get similar results if you copy what the majority is doing.
= you’ll lose $.
Here’s what you DO need:
0️⃣ Step 0: Preparation
Most people fail before they even begin.
Crafting a persuasive video ad is not only about editing.
In fact, editing is not even the most important part.
Disagree?
Just think about how many ads you’ve seen.
The majority is well-edited.
HQ visuals, and good music.
But you ignore 90% of them.
Why?
Because their creators didn’t work on preparation long enough.
What exactly does preparation involve?
• Setting clear goals
• Knowing the brand inside out
• Having an excellent understanding of the target audience
• Researching the competition
Now, I can guarantee that 90% of editors ignore all of these steps.
They’re “editors” = they edit.
But in order to create effective ads, you have to do more than just edit.
1️⃣ Step 1: Crafting copy
Do you know that the hook is the most…
Of course, you do.
Everyone knows that.
You don’t know how to craft a great hook?
There you go:
👉🏻 Address a common pain point your target audience faces.
I like to start with a question. It’s an easy and effective way to draw your viewers in.
E.g. “No responses to your cold DMs?”
👉🏻 Create a bold statement.
Provocative hooks work as long as they’re relevant.
E.g. “Cold email doesn’t work” ( […] If you do it like XYZ)
👉🏻 Use HQ visuals or creative animation.
A great hook doesn’t need to be verbal.
Intriguing visuals or attention-grabbing animations are powerful.
I often use creative typography to lure viewers in. This creates a hybrid between a verbal and non-verbal hook.
👉🏻 Utilize social proof.
Testimonial quotes work well if they are creative and original. None of the “I loved this product!” BS.
E.g. “Curious how we helped Slack increase retention rate by 18%?”
Now you know the most important step:
How to attract people to even watch your video.
But their attention is rented.
You need to hold it throughout the whole video:
I’ll get to how you can do it using creative editing and animations…
But when it comes to copy:
• Short sentences
• BIG pain addressed
• Benefit-focused
• Power words
• Clear CTA
On to the “fun” stuff:
2️⃣ Step 2: Framework
It’s not easy staring at a blank page.
But it’s easier to have a template, right?
You just fill in the blanks.
So much easier!
Having a proven framework will do two things:
• Make the editing process much easier
• Guarantee your video will convert (and make $)
Nobody wants to spend time and $$$ to have a video that doesn’t convert.
So…
Feel free to use my framework:
Remember:
There’s no “one size fits all”.
You can’t blindly follow this structure every time.
But it will make you more organized and effective.
3️⃣ Step 3: Editing
Yesss.
The sauce.
I’ve been editing videos for almost 7 years and let me tell you this:
I keep learning new things every day.
Softwares change.
Trends change.
Techniques change.
But there are universal tips I can give you:
3.1 Speed
Video ads need to be quick.
Cut often.
Mix things up.
Don’t let the viewer think about anything else for a split second.
Make it the exact opposite of a PowerPoint presentation.
3.2 Movement
Deliberately introducing movement is one of the traits of pro editors.
Increased engagement x5.
What do I mean?
Look at the video below.
Here’s exactly how you can introduce movement:
Avoid static shots.
Introduce:
• Scale up/down animations
• Scale up/down + rotation
• Zoom in + move from L to R (add motion blur)
• Sequences of shots moving in the same direction
• Pop-up of different elements
3.3 Colors
Bad color grading is like sand in your viewer’s eye.
It’s a small but important part of video editing.
Easiest way to spot a good vs bad video creator?
His color grading skills.
It’s not an easy task.
Make sure to first color-correct the footage.
And then grade it.
The best you can do is put in volume and develop and eye.
My colors sucked in my first 50 videos.
3.4 Sound
I don’t have to tell you how important sound is.
Music can dramatically change the whole video.
But sound effects can do that as well.
Look & listen to the beginning. Only SFX 👇🏻
4️⃣ Step 4: Distribution
I learned this one fairly late.
Even though social media platform seems similar, they have completely different specifications.
What I mean by that…
It would be tough for a video ad designed for LinkedIn to perform well on TikTok and vice versa.
Keep your target platform in mind when creating a campaign.
Or you will be disappointed.
⚠️ Final thoughts.
Creating effective video ads is much more than just editing.
Don’t follow what everyone else is doing.
Because it’s not working.
If you want results, you need to put in extra work.
