Over the past year, I’ve helped over 119+ men lose 15-100 pounds.
Here are the 7 most common mistakes I’ve seen in men’s weight loss journeys:
1) Prioritizing Exercise & Neglecting Nutrition
4-5 days/week in the gym won’t overcome your bad eating habits.
It’s likely just adding additional stress to an already inflamed system.
High exercise volume and poor diet lead slow recovery.
You’re simply spinning your wheels.
2) Lack Of A Plan
Nutrition is the biggest lever you can pull.
But life’s crazy, especially with families.
Take 20 minutes to plan out your week.
Put breakfast and lunch on autopilot with simple high protein meals that:
• You enjoy
• Fill you up
• Keep blood sugar stable
Cook 2-3x week on nights you have the least going on.
Cook once to feed yourself 2-3 additional times during the week.
You can leverage these leftovers between social events, ballgames, etc.
This will keep you off the blood sugar rollercoaster and away from the empty calories.
3) Never Ending Excuses
Most guys want to take their health seriously “after vacation” or “after the holiday.”
But there will always be a vacation, a holiday, a birthday, or a work event.
If you continue to use them as excuses, you’ll never change.
You have to commit to changing DESPITE these events.
You can navigate these events (and enjoy them) without destroying your health.
You just need the right mindset, strategy, and plan in place.
4) Drinking Too Much Alcohol
Binge drinking isn’t only making you gain weight.
It’s also destroying your:
- Sleep
- Hormones
- Metabolism
- Testosterone
- Mental health
A couple of drinks in moderation won’t kill you.
But consistent binge drinking will.
5) Not Prioritizing Protein
Overeating carbs like pasta, pizza, and potato chips is easy.
But overeating chicken, steak, and fish?
Much harder.
Another rule of thumb:
Make protein the priority on your plate.
It’ll prevent overeating and keep you satiated.
6) Mindless Snacking
5 minutes of mindlessly munching on potato chips can easily be an extra 1000 calories.
Eat 2-3 protein-heavy meals and try to avoid snacking.
This stabilizes blood sugar and keeps snack cravings under control.
Whenever you’re eating, be intentional.
7) Destructive Social Circles
If your buddies constantly nag you to have another drink, it’ll be hard to get healthy.
But if your friends support your health goals, accomplishing them will be much easier.
Control your inputs and you can take control of your health.
8) Overwhelming Boredom
The biggest reason I see for mindless snacking, consistent drinking, and overeating is boredom.
Most guys are coasting through life.
They finish the 9-5 and “unwind” at night or on holidays.
But they feel existentially bored.
You weren't meant to finish work just so you can numb yourself with food, alcohol, and TV when you get home.
You need a meaningful goal that inspires you in every moment.
You need purpose.
And getting your health and fitness in check is a great starting place.
If you are serious about turning your life around and finding something that gives everyday purpose, I think I can help you.
My brother @brettboettcher1 and I run a men’s group where we’ve helped over 112+ men lose 15-100 pounds, raise energy, and find purpose.
