Historical Perspective #WestBengal
1. Went from an industrial prominent hub to a Labour base State
First the Brits, then CONgress drained the resources of the State, debilitated WB with destructive economic policies
The Left Front ensured "capital flight’ frm WB contd +
2. Violent trade union politics, staunch anti-industry stand
Plus the political violence of ‘gherao’ with huge charged up mobs to pressurize factories to shut down AND applying direct violence
Ended WB’s industrial base under the garb of solving “industrial disputes” +
3. Both the CONgress & Left, systematically destroyed WB’s economy & institutionalised daily political violence
The stage for brewing unrest & growing anger was already set by Congress govt at Centre with its deliberate devastating economic policies for WB & NE states +
4. In '60s Left Front (an alliance of leftist parties headed by CPM) came in political prominence, poured fuel into an alrdy simmering situation in the state. LF became more dominant, clashes started btwn CON/CPM workers &soon tat became part of daily life/accepted norm +
5. At this time, West Bengal saw the horrific Sainbari murder (17 March 1970) where two brothers (both Congress workers) in East Bardhaman were killed and their mother made to eat rice soaked in the blood of her two slain sons +
6. Hemanta Basu on 27 Mar1971, Chairman of the All India Forward Bloc, was killed in broad daylight
This & mny other murders soon institutionalised the culture of political violence tat was used by LF as a mass weapon to keep common ppl undr complete control fear +
7. The Left Front by taking complete control of the rural societies in Bengal through some initial good reforms soon showed their real fascist face, and became the sole authority with no voice from the Opposition. The political silence from Opposition +
8. parties was achieved by unleashing a horrific reign of terror in the everyday lives of people thru various forms of violence: direct threats/routine harassment of party members from opp/houses-party offices burned down/popular workers brazenly murdered, etc.+
9. Came TMC in 2011, nothing changed. What happened was tat the same brute force in the CPI-M now changed colours & kept up with the horrific political violence &brutal killings of opposition party workers, first with the murders of CPM members and now with the BJP workers +
10. What is alarming in current situation is the addition of religious killings under the garb of political violence owing to the huge demographic changes (mostly through illegal immigrants), especially in the border areas that have taken place in WB in the last 2 decades
