Vadakkumnathan Temple - Thrissur (Kerala) We are in highest bliss after visiting this ancient ShivaLinga temple installed by the legendary Parashurama, itβs said to be the first Shiva Temple in South India and is the first temple built by Parashurama 1/11
Thekkinkadu Maidan surrounding the temple is the main venue of the world famous βThrissur Pooramβ Thereβs a banyan tree in front of the western gate of the temple called as βSri Moolasthanβ, this is the place where Shiva rested with his family on his way from Kailasa 2/11
3/11 Legend According to Puranas, Parashurama did 21 cycles around the earth and finally settled at Thrissur after reclaiming the land from sea by throwing his Parashu (Axe). Today this land is called as Parashurama Kshetra covering coastal parts of Kerala , Karnataka & Goa
4/11 In another lore, Parashurama went to Mount Kailasa & requested Shiva to take abode in Kerala along with Parvati & sons On the way, Shiva stopped at a spot & disappeared. Parashurama saw a bright & radiant Shiva lingam & this spot where Shiva manifested is Sri MoolaSthana
5/11 Adi Shankara is believed to have been born to Shivaguru and Aryamba of Kalady consequent to their prayers to lord Vadakkumnathan. The couple devoutly prayed for 41 days at the temple. In honour of Shiva, they named their son as Shankara
6/11 Sakthan Thampuran When Sakthan Thampuran, ascended the throne of Kingdom of Cochin, he changed the capital of Kingdom of Cochin from Thripunithura to Thrissur. He later cleared the teak forest around the temple and introduced the famous Thrissur Pooram festival
7/11 Main Deity The main deity of this temple, Shiva, is worshipped in the form of a huge lingam, which is covered by a mound of ghee, formed by the daily abhishekam with ghee over the years. A devotee looking into the sanctum can now see only a 16-foot-high mound of ghee

9/11 Miracle Everyday about 4-5 kgs of Ghee is offered as Abhisheka by climbing up a ladder Garbhagriha is about 40-42 deg C, yet the ghee doesnβt melt, thereβs no foul smell of the ghee which will otherwise happen in normal citcumstances & the mound is assumed to be Kailasa
10/11 Festivals Thrissur Pooram is called the mother of all Poorams in Kerala. This is conducted in the Malayalam month of Medam. The deities from Parmekavu & Thiruvambady also participate Mahashivatri & Aanayoottu (feeding of elephants) are also celebrated in great grandeur
