Okay ... so ... since people here are jumping to all sorts of conclusions based on the selected timeframe of one clip on Twitter, I decided to mosey over to the replay to see what the heck happened. Because there was surely more to it.
And indeed, there was.
A thread!!!
Okay, it's 15-15. Zhang hits a ball that, you know, probably, hits the sideline.
Line umpire calls it out.
Chair Miriam Bley immediately comes down to check the mark.
She confirms the call.
I'm not one to judge from a kazillion miles away, but it's certainly possible Bley got it wrong.
Zhang certainly thought so. She lost it.
(This likely goes to her general state of mind at the moment).
For a couple of minutes, Zhang is begging the umpire to change her mind. It's not working.
Her team is getting involved and yelling.
Dogs are barking in the distance.
It's all happening.
Zhang asks for the supervisor, but it hasn't happened yet.
About 2 minutes in she appeals to her opponent to overrule the call.
There are bugs annoying Zhang, too.
A minute later she's still complaining and still asking Toth to take her side.
About 3 1/2 minutes in she asks for the supervisor again .
Who finally comes out, and basically tells her there's not much she can do about it.
Five minutes into this, she's still arguing.
5 1/2 minutes later ... still arguing.
Shortly after that, Bley finally gives her a time violation.
Which, from the sound of it, provokes some sort of remark from Team Toth on the other side.
"Who's that?????" wonders Zhang.
Toth, to her discredit, has a sort of smirk on her face.
So Zhang finally gets back to it.
Wins the point.
We're 6 1/2 minutes in by this point.
It was only THEN, after the next point was over, thus sealing the fate of that previous point forever, that Toth went over.
And rubs out the mark.
Which sets Zhang off again.
"If it was out, why you do it?" asks Zhang.
Which, again, is a moot point at this point. Because the NEXT point has already been decided.
That's when Toth said, "Because you're making problems, that's why".
So the game ends, trainer comes out but Zhang has already decided to retire.
And that's it.
To sum up, Toth was a snot. But in actual fact, she didn't do anything WRONG, per se.
She was just in her face about it. Which, again, will prob. be resolved by karma. Hopefully.
The other thing is that Zhang could see she was coming up to smoosh the mark.
Zhang said, "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Keep the mark. Keep the mark".
But Toth ignored her and smooshed it anyway.
Again, it wouldn't have changed anything. But still kinda bratty.
(I corrected this immediately yesterday - damn, no edit function on Twitter - but if you didn't see it this was indeed Morgane Lara, not Miriam Bley).
