After 6 months of selling digital products on the internet I've come to ONE conclusion:
Copywriting is the MOST important skill in digital marketing.
Here are 10 copywriting technqiues to help you sell more stuff (in less time):
P.s. I wish I'd have learned this sooner.
Before we get into it, there are two things to remember:
• Great copywriting can't sell bad stuff. The product has to speak for itself.
• Techniques in isolation are redundant, you have to apply the thinking first.
1/ Enter the Customer's Mind
Who wins in the selling game? The person that knows the prospect the best.
Selling is a game of psychology and empathy. The best way to get to know your customer is to be her.
Here's some questions to get you started.
2/ Know the Awareness
This plays into knowing your customer. Ask yourself if they know they have a problem?
If the answer is no, the copy is very different to if the answer is yes.
Context is everything.
3/ Leverage Pain
Humans all want something. If they didn't they'd never buy anything. Most of the time people buy transformations motivated by pain.
• Overweight → healthy
• Single → relationship
• Poor → rich
Show people the transformation on offer.
4/ Open the Loop
Human beings are curious minds. They like answers to questions. You and I like to know the ending to a story.
By opening the story loop you are inviting your prospects into your writing. They'll want to keep reading because they'll want to know the answer.
5/ Tell Stories
The '$2 billion Sales Letter' doesn't start with a sales pitch, it starts with this opening line:
"On a beautiful late spring afternoon..."
People don't want to be sold to, they want to know how this thing can have a positive impact on their life.
6/ Write to ONE person
This sales letter feels like it's written to you and only you. Like nobody else is in the room. Personalisation is the goal.
How do you make your pitch sound like it's written to ONE person?
Write with a single person in mind.
Then take out their name.
7/ Start With Research
90% of the writing happens in the research.
Ask yourself these questions (about your product):
• Why did I make it?
• What am I most proud of?
• What is a growing trend in my market?
• What do other people like most about my product?
8/ Anchor Your Price
Have you heard about the wine pricing strategy? You place a high-price wine at the top of the menu to make the others look cheap in comparison.
But you can do it with other variables:
• Hours spent vs. money spent
• Is $150 worth 200 hours saved?
9/ Offer Equation
Alex Hormozi's offer equation.
After you've completed step 5, combine it with the part of the equation that fits the best.
e.g. If your selling a book on the secrets to selling and your USP is you have 10 years selling. Leverage the 'time delay' part.
10/ So That...
I love this question. It made me rewrite my entire landing page.
The best question?
'So that?'
• I want to lose weight SO THAT I can feel confident
• I want to earn more SO THAT I have certainty about the future.
Equation: I want to ____ SO THAT ____.
