FARM LESSON:
GRAFTING (Definition, Process, Advantages, Success & Failure of Grafting):
(a). WHAT IS GRAFTING?
Grafting is the practice of taking the upper part of a plant and attaching it to the root system of another plant in order to be grown as a single plant.
Thread: 1/11.
(b). THE PROCESS OF GRAFTING (STEPS TAKEN DURING GRAFTING):
1. Prune the rootstock.
2Trim the lower and upper ends of the scion.
3. Make a slash-cut at the bottom of your scion.
4. Carefully line-up the slash-cut of the scion with the rootstock
5. Seal up the graft.
2/11.
CONT'N OF THE STEPS TAKEN DURING GRAFTING:
6. Add some grafting wax or sealing compound to the end of the scion to protect it from drying out. Allow your new graft to heal.
3/11.
(c). ADVANTAGES OF GRAFTING FRUIT TREES:
1. Provides resistance to soil borne diseases and pests.
2. It promotes relatively fast growth and early flowering and fruiting in plants.
3. Improves the quality of fruits.
4. Increases the yield.
4/11.
CONT'N OF THE ADVANTAGES OF GRAFTING FRUIT TREES:
5. It can be used to produce varieties of seedless fruits.
6. Grafting allows us to preserve and extend the life of valuable fruiting trees.
5/11.
(d). ELEMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL GRAFTING OPERATION:
1. The rootstock and scion must be compatible.
2. The vascular cambium of the scion must be placed in intimate contact with that of the rootstock.
3. Grafts must be given proper care for some period of time after grafting.
6/11.
CONT'N OF THE ELEMENTS FOR SUCCESSFUL GRAFTING OPERATION:
4. The grafting operation must be done at a time when the rootstock and scion are in the proper physiological stage.
5. Immediately after completion of grafting, all cut surfaces must be protected from desiccation.
7/11.
(e). CAUSES OF GRAFT OPERATION FAILURE:
1. Poor formation of the graft union due to problems with anatomical mismatching (when the rootstock and scion tissue is not lined up properly), poor grafting technique, adverse weather conditions and poor hygiene.
8/11.
CONT'N OF THE CAUSES OF GRAFT OPERATION FAILURE:
2. Mechanical damage to the graft union
3. Graft incompatibility. This can occur for number of reasons, including:
(i). When a weak scion is grafted onto an excessively vigorous rootstock.
9/11.
CONT'N OF THE CAUSES OF GRAFT OPERATION FAILURE:
(ii). Genetic incompatibility or biochemical reaction of the rootstock and scion. The failure can be fairly immediate or delayed, perhaps twenty years or more.
(iii). Virus or phytoplasma infection.
10/11.
