China accounted for the 3/4 of the total population lifted out of poverty.
There are different types of poverty:
🔸Absolute poverty
🔸relative poverty
🔸systemic/geographic poverty
In 2020, China declared the end of systemic/geographic absolute poverty in the country
1/🧵
Absolute poverty is defined by the World Bank based on the minimal amount of daily income for basic necessities.
China has eliminated this type of poverty.
Absolute poverty in China was caused by geographic constraints, and are systemic, ie entire villages/counties in poverty
These poverty regions of China were isolated mountainous counties and villages.
An example of this type of geographic poverty can be found in the infamous "Cliff Village"
Located in the remote valleys of Daliang mountains, populated by Ethnic Yi people
The land is so poor and mountainous, farming is not profitable
The "roads" are so treacherous, schoolchildren had to climb for 2 hours up a cliff between their boarding school and homes.
Poverty here is entirely systemic and geographically caused
This is why government intervention is a must, trickle down economics will never go up these cliffs.
In 2020, this last corner of China rife with systemic poverty ended poverty.
The people were given free housing with all the modern amenities, from healthcare to education
The villagers were given new plots of more fertile land if they want to farm it.
Private companies were given incentives, such as tax breaks, to invest in these areas, providing the villagers with jobs.
Most importantly, the children were given a healthy and safe environment to grow up and prosper in.
No more climbing 2 hours up a cliff, just enjoy the after school hours with friends.
The targeted poverty alleviation program were implemented all across China.
Helping countless communities and lifted the last 20 million Chinese out of absolute/systemic poverty, caused by geographic constraints.
This doesn't mean there are no poverty, there are relative poverty in any country
But, those type of poverty will be circumstantial rather than systemic, relative rather than absolute.
President Xi announced in 2012, the plan to end poverty by 2020
Promises made, promises kept.
