Why Tomato prices and skyrocket in India and when it will come down (Explained)
The reason is mix of :
1. Environmental factors
2. Market factors
These two factors occurred during Jan - March 2023
This thread will answers all the questions in simple language
1/9
In India, Tomato supplies comes from two crops :
Rabi crop : It comes in market from Junnar region of Maharashtra and Part of Karnataka n Andhra in
March April and supplies tomato till July- August
So during March to July August
Supplies comes from Rabi crop
second one is
Kharif crop : It supplies tomato from August to March and it comes from Uttar Pradesh, Nashik
Tomato crop takes 3 month n then 45 days in picking
First batch of Rabi comes in March
and second batch in June
Production cost of
Rabi : Rs 12/kg
Kharif : Rs 10/kg
Now if u understood basics then know what wrong happened this year
When first batch of Rabi came this year in Tomato then price of tomato fell significantly
The market price of tomato that time was Rs 10-15 kg and farmers were forced to sell at Rs 3 - 5 kg
And reason of this price fall in March was :
Crop that coming in market was inferior quality
first batch of Rabi tomato crop is transplanted in Dec and cut in March but during Dec and March this year two things happened
1. Maharashtra, Karnataka n Andhra saw excessive heat. Tomato Rabi crop require little bit winter
2. crop was devastated by the a leaf curl virus
Due to this quality of Tomato gone down and middleman took benefit of it and reduced buying price
So in March farmers were shocked. They faced huge loss
Their production cost was Rs 12/kg n they had to sell at Rs 3/kg
so they didn't plant second batch of Rabi Tomato that was supposed to due in April n supposed to come in Market in June
And data also confirms it
Junnar taluka normally reports around 3,000-5,000 acres of second batch of rabi tomato but his year, it is not even 1,000 acres
So next question when will price of tomato go down ?
And answer is when Kharif crop will come in market then it will go down
Kharif crop in market will come by end of Aug so prices of tomato will start to go down from end of Aug or by Sep
If there had been farm bills then farmers cud sell tomato outside APMC 'mandis' to whoever they want during March April n probably things had been different
