🔵⚫️ Rasmus Winther Højlund : Every Serie A Goal in 2022/2023 : moves in penalty box, the press, runs in behind, connection with Lookman
THREAD 🧵⤵️
First, lets say how Hojlund moved when Atalanta didn't have the ball : That triangle shape (usually Pasalic-Lookman-Hojlund) was supported by a another line of pressure, with short distances to avoid short passes from opponent's midfielders.
This is an important point to explain Hojlund's consequent activity in Atalanta's team, which led to some interesting situations in his goals (we will see why).
1°) Atalanta vs Monza
Hojlund, in the majority of Atalanta's offensive situations, starts by postioning himself between left center back and left back, because his ideal move is to suddenly jump on the second post, in case of a difference made on the channel.
2°) Atalanta vs Spezia
When Hojlund receives passe back to goal, he's got the ability to keep the ball in his feet even under pressure, or suddenly drag his man-marker on the side of penalty box to shoot, a bit like Osimhen did for Napoli last season.
3°) Atalanta vs Bologna
Hojlund, again starts between the left center back and the left back, and suddenly runs in behind when Lookman attacked the space left between Bologna's midfield and central defense. Hojlund and Lookman reached an excellent connection on the pitch.
4°) Atalanta vs Salernitana
Hojlund's profile also add another asset to Gasperini's animation, and in one single pass, Atalanta could break the whole defense, thanks to his excellent physical attributes (the way he accelerates, shoulders upfront, head down, reminds someone 🤔).
5°) Atalanta vs Lazio
As Gasperini wants to recover the ball at least in the mid third, he needs player with excellent speed to attack quickly. Look at Hojlund distances he covers in the space of 2-3 seconds : ends up with a goal.
6°) Atalanta vs Lecce
Hojlund's pressing, as I said, is full of discipline and consistency. Doing it even if Atalanta is 2-0 down at the 87th minute, tells a lot about Hojlund's resilience and willingness.
7°) Atalanta vs Empoli :
Hojlund's moves in penalty box is also an interesting point to analyze : starts from the center, navigates across different positions and waits the ideal moment to show up and score.
8°) Atalanta vs Verona
The connection between Hojlund and Lookman has caused damages for all Serie A defenses, they understand each other and Lookman knows if Hojlund drops to claim the ball and shoot (such as this goal), pass the ball or run in behind.
9°) Atalanta vs Monza
It's quite funny to see Hojlund scored his last goal the same way he scored his first of the season and represents well the way he wants to end his offensive actions, in cross situation : the second post.
To conclude, Hojlund learned and made huge progress under Gasperini, because of the discipline the Italian coach demands in the press, and in his runs.
A very good finisher, sometimes can lack of a cold-blood mindset in big games, but experience will fix it soon enough.
