Thread on religious life of Varendra, which once used to be Shree Kshetra.
The land between two rivers Padma and Brahmaputra comprising the districts of Dinajpur Maldah Rajshahi Bogra, where the mighty Karatoya river once used to flow.
It used to be part of Pundravardhana
Division having capital at Pundranagar. The geography was quite different then.
Varendra has its own subculture like the Gaudiya (west of Padma river) and Bangal( Dhaka- mymensing).
It has been inhabited since ancient puranic times, loaded with archeological sites.
According to text Karatoya Mahatmaya, the origin of Karatoya is from Lord Shiva and Mata Parvatis wedding.
Shri Hari Vishnu, Skanda and even Parashurama occupies different positions of this holy land.
The archeological sites named Skander Dhap, Govinder mondir and archeological sculptures proves the worship of deities and various sects of Hinduism.
From Pala period, the region of Varendra became major centre of architecture, trade, culture and religion as it is fatherland of Pala Kings 'Janakabahu'.
From Ramcharita of Sandhyakar Nandi written on Pala Prince RamaPala, we can find existence of three cities.
Named Skandanagara, Sonitapura and Mahastangarh, which became Ramavati, the new capital.
It also mentions Varendra to be birthplace of Brahmana families.
Three Shiva temples were built by King RamaPala here.
Ramavati fell to decay during Sena Period, who shifted capital to Gaud.
Later Mahastan fell to Islamic attacks led by Sufi auliyas.
It was recovered by Kamatas.
Raja Ganesha was from Varendra, who took good revenge. Atlast the Koch kingdom controlled it before Mughal invasion
