PYGMY MASTER RACE THEORY
Pygmies. Funny little chaps who couldn't keep up in evolution & lost out to more advanced races, right?
Wrong. In this short thread I'm going to argue that Pygmies are in fact the perfect soldiers, & were only eventually defeated by the use of firearms.
'Pygmy' just means what you think it means - an ethnic group who are really short. The ones I want to talk about are the African Pygmies. They all live in the Congo Basin. The Congo is obviously a river, but it's also a giant forest. So, these are forest people. That's important.
These days they are reduced to the status of an underclass to the surrounding farmers, who are normal sized. The obvious conclusion is that big people are always gonna bully little people. After all, in pre-modern warfare a big guy's gonna bash the little guy, right?
This is the opposite of the truth. What I'm proposing is that, in reality, the only thing which allowed the big Bantu people to conquer the little Pygmies was buying firearms off Europeans (in exchange for slaves).
W/out firearms involved, the Pygmies were the kings of the forest
How come? Being big is an advantage in a fight, right?
Well that depends on the fight.
In a shield-wall - yeah, probably.
But warfare in a tropical jungle would be very different. Much more based on projectile warfare - bows & arrows, spears, darts, blow-pipes. All poisoned.
In this context, size matters a lot less than firepower - and that depends on numbers. And this is where the Pygmies' diminutive stature becomes a super-power. Small people eat less than big people. So for the same food-base, you get more archers, & superior firepower.
The Bantus on the coast traded slaves to Europeans, in exchange for firearms. My proposal here is that during the Early Modern Period, at the same time Gunpowder Empires were being established elsewhere (Central Asia, the Americas) the Kingdom of Kongo established another.
And that it was only at this point that the Pygmies lost their freedom to their Bantu neighbours and were reduced to Helot status.
Remove firearms, & in a century's time the Bantu would have been driven out of the Congo, which would be full of kingdoms guarded by Pygmy archers.
