Whenever low platelets are reported, always consult lab to check peripheral film and make sure its not pseudothrombocytopenia. Sometimes the platelets are normal, but due to the reagent EDTA in blood test tube for cbc, platelets are clumped.
As machine counts platelets based on a certain size, these aggregates of platelets are not counted giving false thrombocytopenia. This is very commonly seen in stable patients with isolated thrombocytopenia.
When peripheral film is seen you can easily identify the platelet clumps. So either the lab tech or hematologist can give you an estimated normal or low. Otherwise you can vortex ( vibrate/shake) the tube and rerun the sample, where the clumps break and give you correct picture.
