Attributes to succeed at work:
1. I have had opportunities to be a subordinate working with various supervisors of diverse character (the hard & the soft). I managed to work well with all of these and would always get Exceeding Expectations ratings during performance reviews.
2. For a number of years, I also worked with many subordinates, some I promoted while some I recommended to other sister entities for higher roles. Unfortunately, some were not promoted or recommended 4 elevation. There are key attributes to take note to succeed at work.
3. Securing a job is not the end, you need to grow, influence, & get better rewards for your skills. Make an impact, be a key member of the team, and be the first to be in boss's mind during promotions. Otherwise you will be stuck at the same level, get disappointed & demotivated
4. The following attributes have helped me a lot in my career and I recommend you pick a few. I got on well with my superiors. This list is not exhaustive, so you can add some. For me, these attributes are key if one is to be a key member of my team.
5. Demonstrate positive attitude always. No one wants to work with a coleague with negative attitude. Cooperate well and don't make life difficult for others working with you. Rather, facilitate the right environment always where others cherish working with you. Be approachable.
6. Communicate well with all stakeholders, both subordinates and superiors. Have the right tone in your emails.Avoid arrogance and unnecessary arguments. Do not challenge you seniors, but approach them with suggestions. Also know when to stop suggesting otherwise it becomes noise
7 a. Treat all team members with respect. Be a problem solver as opposed to being one to ask others for solutions. See the world as having many solutions than many problems. Move along with you superior, consult him on your solutions before implementing, remember you are a team.
7 b. If accompanying your boss to a meeting, discuss your views with him first and take a common position to it. Let it not be a cup final between you and the boss in this meeting. Some bosses want to speak in such meetings while you take notes so understand your boss's style.
8. Be the best that you can be in your field & carry the team. Do not be a free rider. Be the core team member, a point of reference for technical & key work issues. Be confident and believe in yourself. Do not be the one to disturb others asking questions, let them come to you
9. Have deep understanding of the business, linkages, value chain & suggests improvements. If working in one section, take time to understand the other sections. Volunteer time to learn other tasks & accept additional responsibilities. Don't limit yourself to your job description
10. Be proud of your work, deliverables & final product , apply yourself fully, reduce errors, consider more factors, self-review your work. Some errors of the errors we see you wonder whether someone's mind was at work or far away from it. Produce high-quality work.Avoid rework
11. Be ethical and professional. Do not exhibit some corrupt tendencies. If you see unethical conduct, report it or reprimand one doing it. Be known as someone straightforward and eliminate "mbudzi inodya payakasungirirwa" mentality. Avoid get-rich-quick mentality.
12. Prioritize tasks by stakeholder type, importance, dealines & value to the organisation. Don't be all over the show. However, in some areas, multi-tasking is required. Be efficient too, avoid taking too long that necessary to complete a task. Use limited resources and time
13. Plan your work, failure to plan is planning to fail. Always give honest feedback to your stakeholders & boss. Do not wait for the boss to ask progress from you. Explain challenges faced in advance. Challenges explained later are excuses, avoid this. Do not be a "Yes" guy
14. Upgrade yourself to be better, enroll for short courses, attend workshops on areas of your work, use Google to learn new skills like Excel, and understand concepts better. Learn better ways of completing tasks. Ensure your skills remain relevant & not obsolete.
15. Those who are the opposite of the above will always face problems in their work, clash with everyone and shall not know peace at work. This leads to missed promotions, below expectations ratings which may reduce bonus. Good luck if you do not get fired.
