Turn bullet points into a polished research proposal.
Use ChatGPT's creativity and Paperpal's precision.
The ultimate research proposal workflow:
👇
1. Write down ideas
Describe what you are doing. It should be brief, but not let out any facts.
Do not worry about grammar, spelling, style or anything else.
Like with all AI tools, your output will be only as good as your input.
1b. Prompt to create the first draft.
Paste your description and describe what you want as the output.
Here I am asking for a "research proposal of about 2000 words".
Key Point: Ask ChatGPT to indicate where citations will go.
(Copy & Paste in ALT text of image)
1c. ChatGPT's output
The output is a pretty decently sized chunk of text.
Most importantly it has a preliminary structure
The output might depend on the "Custom Instructions" you set for ChatGPT:
2. Copy & Paste to Word
First, think about your citations. Do not blindly follow ChatGPT.
Thinking about which papers are useful to prove a point, develops and sharpens your thought.
You can use this workflow as an exercise as well.
Insert citations using the Zotero Plugin.
3. Edit and Write a refined version of your text.
The workflow so far is easy, but now comes the "hard" part of writing and fleshing out.
This is where @teampaperpal can greatly help you.
Paperpal, unlike ChatGPT, is trained on ACADEMIC texts.
@teampaperpal 3a. Paperpal: Language Suggestions
This feature suggests small changes to your writing and corrects grammar/spelling etc.
Install their Word Plugin for ease of use.
Click the settings button to switch to American/British English and reduce/increase the number of suggestions.
@teampaperpal 3b. Paperpal: Rewrite
Rewrite offers a way of rewriting a whole paragraph with one click.
Sometimes you have a feeling that a paragraph does not "sit right".
Use rewrite to get new ideas on how better to phrase it.
@teampaperpal 3c. Paperpal: Trim
If you have a word-length limit, this feature can save you time.
Select a paragraph and ask Paperpal to trim it.
The result is usually a 10-40% reduction in length, you can control the length manually as well.
@teampaperpal Disclaimer
AI tools can save you a massive amount of time - but they can't think for you.
Note that the intellectual ideas: content & relevant citations came entirely from me.
The text editing, however, was done by AI.
You give direction, and AI executes.

@teampaperpal I know AI in academia is a controversial topic. Let's have a conversation about it.
What do you think will be the role of AI in academia, when you see workflows like this one?
Will it help us, will it make science better or worse?
