Here’s how to write a PERSONAL STATEMENT for your graduate school applications [and why it is different from an SoP]
An SoP is more about your scientific interests, long-term goals and fit with the program. While your personal goals and inclinations can be a part of your SoP, what takes the front seat is your ideas about advancing knowledge in your area of interest.
In a personal statement, you describe how your diverse experiences, unique to you (like your geographical, economic, social, familial) circumstances prompt you to venture into graduate school & make your choose a certain path of career.
In both personal statements and SoP, you need to talk about your academic and personal interests.
