8 must-know tips if you want to run a successful rabbitry business! πŸ‡πŸ‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
#Thread #Mfasha #FarmingTips
1. Rabbits are raised for meat, fur, manure, organic pesticide products, and pets. Rabbit meat is low in fat and rich in protein, rabbit fur is used for clothing and making accessories, and rabbit urine is used in insect control due to its pungent smell.
2. Rabbit manure is organic matter and improves poor soil structure, drainage, and moisture retention. It enhances the life cycle of microorganisms in the soil. Worms love rabbit manure. It is not as smelly as other manures and is easy to handle.
3. Research rabbit breeds and choose the one based on your goals, such as meat production or fur. Common meat breeds include New Zealand, Californian, and Flemish Giant. Rex and Satin are popular fur breeds. They also crossbreed with local breeds for improvement.πŸ“ž@jbniyonsengaπŸ‡
4. For reproduction, rabbits are fast-growing, short-cycle reproducing animals. A well-managed rabbit breeds 6 times a year, giving 5 to 12 babies. They first conceive for 4-5 months, with 30 days of gestation. Kits wean after 30 days, and a mother needs to be separated from them
5. Housing should be well-ventilated and predator-proof, with adequate space for easy hygiene. Rabbit cages or hutches can be purchased or homemade. Rabbits don’t like windy places. Cage size can be 60cmβœ–50cm, varying with rabbit sizes. One per cage, except for mothers with kits
6. Regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations are necessary to maintain rabbit health. Some common rabbit diseases are coccidiosis, pneumonia, foot and mouth (FMD), diarrhea, bloat, dermatitis, and others. Hygiene is 80% efficient in preventing infections. Quarantine sick ones
7. Feed rabbits mainly dry fresh vegetables supplemented with concentrate (maize, soya, and other forages). Kits need protein-rich feeds; the adult needs more fiber. Provide clean water ad libitum. Sprouts can also be a great feeding choice (Contact @Uruhimbi if you need some).
8. Finally, farmers should seek advice from experienced breeders and fellow farmers. Planning, record-keeping, hard-working, and great marketing approaches are essentials for farms' success.
