The contrarianism about the interest in Romans is like being contrarian against drinking water.
It's so heavily documented that it's going to be appealing to study & reference - on both a shallow (legionaries look cool) and deep level (the evolution of the republic and its fate).
It's less appealing when your first exposure to another interesting history is how much the guy sharing it wants it to be the next Halo/WoW/Rome-killer.
It comes off as insecure. Just share it without mentioning Rome, if it's so irrelevant.
Almost no one in Europe cares about my 1860s American Civil War content. I don't then start badmouthing what they're interested in to make my own interests seem smarter or better.
I just keep drawing stuff about it and referencing it in my own works when relevant.
"But Meso-Americans and Indo-Europeans are cool!" They are! Make things about them that has more lasting appeal than a few doodles here and there.
Make the Illiad like Homer did when he looked back to the past.
There's a reason that @/GramanhFolcwald's comics do so well! It's comics that all tie into the same world he's trying to present.
@/Setzeri and @/OstwindProjekt have both brought Finnish history to the spotlight. Why? Because they all present a world AND characters WITH story.
