“Scarcity Brain by Michael Easter”
This book reveals the evolutionary foundations behind our brain’s fixations so that we can recognize the trap, get out of it and embark on journey of living more satisfying, healthier and meaningful life.
7 lessons from the book 🧵
1) Scarcity Brain (cues):
2) Scarcity Loop:
- An opportunity to get something of value that improves our life.
- Unpredictable Rewards
- Quick Repeatability
We can see the loop in our everyday life like Social Media (mindless scrolling), Food (overeating), gaming, shopping, games, news, etc.
3) How The Scarcity Loop Hooks Us:
All animals, including humans, want a reward infinitely more if we aren't sure we'll get it. If it's received unpredictably.
Unpredictability makes us obsessive and far more likely to quickly repeat the behavior.
4) People systematically overlook subtraction:
5) On any arguments either it be with your friend, spouse or colleague, ask yourself:
“Do I want to be right or happy?”
6) Slow information is often better than fast information.
7) A great insight by Laura Zerra:
“Hear people's stories, experience the entirety of the human condition - the ins and outs, ups and downs, goods and bads of it and just have a really experience of living. These human experiences will change your perspective.”
I also enjoyed listening to @Michael_Easter on The Joe Rogan podcast after finishing the book over the weekend. I would highly recommend this book to one and anyone!
