Let them take charge:
Decision-making is a skill.
One children aren't often given enough of a chance to develop.
Let them make choices of their own.
This reinforces neural pathways that are used in executive function, and more complex choices.

Opportunities For Failure:
You can't sugarcoat everything.
There have to be real chances for real failure.
Handling this facing what comes and growing from it..
Builds the desire to make better decisions in the future to avoid a similar outcome.

Improvement Game:
This game is simple.
Pick anything and each add one way it can be improved.
These can be realistic, if unreasonable (recommended).
Eg add a second mug handle to pick it up from either side.
Or fantastical eg make the table float with magnets.

This builds analytical skills that become autonomous.
And spill over to thinking through situations and making decisions based on them.
Realism is recommended because it adds the challenge of it having to be functional.
Fantastical is fun to dream up wacky ideas.

And Then?:
Get your child to imagine a situation and follow up with the question:
And then?
After every answer, re-ask that question.
If they derail it, dive into why and try to get them back on track.
They will begin to build the skill to imagine further into the future.

Problem Anticipation:
Get your child to list out step by step the consequences of an action they'll take.
Get them to reach a conclusion on their own, or offer a rebuttal if you see it going differently.
Thinking out multiple steps shows them their choices have results.

I don't know about you..
But I want my kids to grow up understanding how to plan for the long term..
..and live in a world with other people who can do the same.
Order a copy of the book for your kids with the link in my bio. π€
