The state of Israel has declared war. But it feels strange because Palestinians have been subject to war from the state of Israel for the past 75 years. My friends who survived this madness have a mixture of pride and anxiety. Pride because people in Gaza have been under siege since 2005, but now, the siege is broken by force. We should not put any hopes in the hands of Western governments because they’re racist. They’ve tolerated the brutalisation and murder of the Palestinian people for the past 75 years. A lot of the arguments from the West, even by moderate politicians, is that they condemn all violence. But during the 2018 peaceful protests (Great March of Return) organised by civil society, youth and women in Gaza, 195 Palestinians were killed, including 41 children. Instead of supporting these protestors, the US and EU supported Israel’s right to defend itself even as Israel was shooting peaceful civilians. Kids, journalists wearing uniforms, paramedics in uniform were shot dead. What other options do Palestinians have other than armed resistance? This oppression won’t be brought to an end by the Palestinians asking Israel nicely to allow them to have 22% of their historic land, and to be nice.
